We are a proud member of Pack for a Purpose, an initiative that allows travelers like you to make a lasting impact in the community at your travel destination. If you save just a few kilos of space in your suitcase and take supplies for area schools or medical clinics in need, you’ll make a priceless impact in the lives of our local children and families. Please click here to see what supplies are needed for our project/projects.
Gauteng area: FeedSA
We at Salute Africa, in association with FEEDSA are committed to feeding the hearts, minds, and tummies of South African children who are forced to go to school on an empty stomach. FEEDSA is a non-profit organisation whose main aim is to establish feeding programmes within townships. These feeding programmes are aimed at those who receive no other forms of funding whatsoever. They also implement the building and setting up of crèches (from the infrastructure to operations), teacher training and teaching curriculum. FEED SA works hands-on in the townships on a grassroots level, sourcing their beneficiaries through prominent and reliable contacts within the communities.
Candy and balloons are not on the needs lists as they are harmful to the children and the environment for the following reasons:
- Few of the children benefiting from these projects have no access to toothpaste, toothbrushes, or a dentist. The candy promotes cavities
- The balloons, once they become deflated, are a choking hazard for wildlife.
Instead of taking candy or balloons, use that space for additional requested supplies, as they are priceless.
When you Pack for a Purpose, please take only the specific items requested. These are the supplies that are needed and will be greatly appreciated. The lists have been well-researched and unrequested items, even with the best of intentions, are largely inappropriate for the communities and are likely to have few short-term and no long-term benefits.

Western Cape area: Masibulele Educare Center
Imagine you are a student. You have your textbooks, stationery and the requirements you need to learn BUT the room you are sitting in is either:
- too hot to focus
- too cold to think straight
- too dark to read without strain
I know I wouldn’t be able to concentrate… Would you?
Salute Africa is proud to be working with a school called Masibulele Educare Centre in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, and take part in the #letsbuildmasibulele – a collaborative project undertaken by a variety of stakeholders who have come together to rebuild a school that has been deemed structurally unsafe.
The school currently has 140 children in a double – storey shack that is not conducive for effective learning. Funding that contributes to the operating of the school has been withheld by the government, as the school needs to meet minimum safety and fire requirements to be eligible for this i.e. by having to rebuild the school.
Our Mission is to build a community of empowered individuals who will impact the future. This can only be achieved if one can learn in a space that meets their physical, emotional and intellectual needs.
